California Carpet Stewardship Program

The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) approved the Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) carpet stewardship plan (PDF) in January 2012. The Carpet Stewardship Program began July 1, 2011, requiring carpet producers to charge an assessment on carpet sold. CARE, a trade organization for carpet manufacturers, administers the program. Consumers pay for the program through a surcharge (or assessment) on carpet, currently 5-cents per square yard of carpet sold in California. Visit CalRecycle's Carpet Stewardship Program website for further information, including results from the first year of the program.
