Vermont passes first HHW EPR law

In May 2023, Vermont's household hazardous waste (HHW) producer responsibility bill, H.67, passed the legislature and awaits the governor's signature.

The bill would create a statewide HHW EPR program, managed and sustainably funded by the manufacturers of these products. According to the Product Stewardship Institute, local governments will have the opportunity to participate in the program and be reimbursed by manufacturers for their cost of collection. A stewardship organization representing "manufacturers of household products containing hazardous materials" would need to submit plans no later than January 1, 2025.
