Safe Chemicals Act of 2013 (S 696)

The Safe Chemicals Act of 2013, S 696, introduced by Senator Lautenberg and Senator Gillibrand on April 10, 2013, would reform the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and limit the use of chemicals linked to cancer and other illnesses.

NWPSC Activities: Chemical Policy

The NWPSC Chemical Policy Subcommittee advocates for policies that promote safer products such as policies that encourage manufacturers to design products that do not contain toxic and hazardous materials and can be readily reused and/or recycled. Where no alternatives to toxic and hazardous components and ingredients exist, the NWPSC believes that producers should share in the responsiblity for managing the product at the end of life.

The US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (HR 4040) became Public Law No: 110-314 on August 14, 2008. In 1972, Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA), which created the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), to protect the public against unreasonable risks associated with consumer products.

US Household Product Labeling Act of 2009 (HR 3057/S 1697)

The Household Product Labeling Act of 2009 (HR 3057 / S 1697), introduced in June of 2009, would require any household cleaning product or similar product to bear a label on the product's container or packaging that contains a complete and accurate list of all the product's ingredients.
